(This English translation is proposed by Bauhinia)
Occasionally, we catch some stories through the media about people who want to become famous by doing something weird. For instance, a young man robbed a wallet of a woman without running away so as to be known due to the police arrest. Another story is about a young girl who smoked 10 cigarettes at the same time in public in order to be put in a news article. Still a person came up to the top floor of a high building with the anouncement in advance that he would jump down to kill himself. The police had to come and prevent him from that action. After this splash spread out, people found out he didn’t mean to kill himself at all but just to get some fame.
To be well-known seems to be a deep human desire in every age. People want to be known, complimented or applauded because these “so-called” values bring them a feeling of safety, value and greatness. Now, we may wonder why Jesus just does the opposite. While his disciples is standing in awe due to the transfiguration in Tabor mountain, Jesus asks them to keep this vision as a deep secret. Why? Isn’t it true that the more people know about this transfiguration, the more convenient it is for his preaching the Gospels? Isn’t it true that their belief can be enhanced thanks to their admiration to Him? That’s really difficult to understand !
My dear friend, I’d like to tell you a story that can help understand the reason.
A young man in his thirties with some special characters was born in a region of so poor living condition. Seeing his talents, the neighbors usually advised him to find a brighter future in a more prosperous part of the country. However, he kept staying there with his family and always spent his own time helping others instead of getting married, seeking to reach the peak of success in career or finding a comfortable life for himself. He came the poor and the miserable to pay great care to them, listen to them, show great sympathy towards them or help them as much as he could.
One day, he decided to leave his hometown to broaden his mission. It is then that people found something invaluable missing. Without his presence, their life lacked great care, sympathy, coziness and close connections. He set his foot into a wide variety of roads, on which many became his disciples. Witnessing the wonders he accomplished, they began to dream about a future blazing with glory. More crowds followed him because they found so much meaning of life from him. Nevertheless, not every great deed was seen by the crowds except his disciples. That’s why they felt an urge to tell them more about their Master. However, he asked them not to say anything to anyone without any explanation. Again, that’s really difficult to understand !
But eventually, they would come up with a clear understanding of all !
Around him now are mournings, cries and curses… His body is scarved from the whipping rods, countless beats, thrusts… by people to whom he never gave hatred. Also, they spat on his face, put a thorny loop on his head and kept insulting him… The people who hated him had set an evil plan to defame and destroy him cruelly. Consequently, he was sentenced to death! After much painful and shameful torture, he was hung upon the cross. Death on cross is the most ruthless and cruel punishment ever that the darkness in the human heart can invent.
At that hour, Jesus Christ prayer: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Lk 23:34) The universe fell into darkness. And in that darkness, a source of marvelously intense Light was shining out from the cross. All lights suddenly became too dim before this Light. Here: the Light from Jesus’ heart. Here: the Light of God’s love. This is the “last transfiguration” which reveals the whole truth of God’s love for us human beings. No more secret! No more searching needed! Here: the Lamb of God who offers us his own life. Here: our God!
At that time, Jesus Christ cried out in a loud voice: “It is finished. And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.”(Jn 19:30) Yes, the transfiguration in Mount Tabor is finished right here. It is in that precious moment that all His disciples grasp the in-depth meaning of his command to keep secret.
As He has proclaimed, after 3 days, He arises from the dead. Love has won over hatred. Life has defeated death. The Moment of Ressurrection! Now, the picture of who He is is fully expressed. Now, his disciples achieves the true and profound understanding of every detail of their Teacher’s life: His birth, His growth, His Sacrifice and His resurrection all sprang from the unique reason: Love for human beings. Now is the right time that all his disciples can “stand in the rooftop” to proclaim what they know about their Teacher.
My dear friend, waiting time has past! We are all his disciples. Let’s make known our Teacher, Jesus Christ.
