Three yet one
Solemnity of the Holy Trinity
A twelve year old student, Vi, says to his mother:
“Mom, today the catechist taught us about the Trinity. I didn’t understand well.”
His mother asks: “What did she teach you?”
“She said the Trinity was the most foundational and important mystery of our faith. The Trinity consists of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. They are three Persons but only one God. How can three be one and one three?”
“That’s a good question, my son! In general, we human beings are not deep and broad enough to understand the interior reality of God, but we can partly understand what God has revealed to us.”
“From the revelation,” the mother continues, “let me explain in a simple way to you as follows: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are one God because they have the same nature and power. They are inseparably in one another. But God is also triune because each One of them is a distinct divine Person, having their proper characteristics. The perfect love in God makes the Three Persons united in one and makes the One Godhead maintain the complete uniqueness of the Three Persons. Do you understand better now?” asks the mother.
“Not really, mom!” responds the son.
“It’s ok. Don’t worry son. God will gradually illuminate and guide you to a better understanding. From my experience of a few decades on earth, I’d like to give you an example about the presence of the Trinity in our family. But before hearing it, it’s important for you to remember that I will only speak about the presence of the Trinity that helps our family’s happiness and not about God’s divine nature; nor will I want to compare the Trinity to a human family. Is it clear, my dear?”
“Yes, because the Trinity is beyond everything, right mom?”
“Intelligent son!” She compliments her child.
“It’s your son, mom! I’m listening.”
“Our family has three members: your father, you and me. When we live consciously in the presence of the Trinity, we will love one another with all our heart, live for one another’s happiness and be united wholeheartedly. Why can this wonderful thing take place? Because the Trinity is love and among them only exists perfect love. You see, when we have the Trinity in our life, we will become one by love.
“Yes, I understand what you just said.” Vi’s face radiates with joy.
“Now, when we follow the model of the Trinity in our relationships, although we are one family, we will appreciate the differences of each member. Each one will feel that he/she is most true to his/her identity. Your father is completely himself, you are completely yourself and I am completely myself. Being able to be oneself is living fully and happily. The personal differences of each member will create wonderful richness of our family.
“Oh, mom, you remind me of a detail in a wedding: When the bride and groom exchange their vows in church, they promise to love and respect each other all the days of their lives. Love and respect derive from the model of the Trinity, right mom?” Vi asks intelligently.
“Wow, you are clever, son! Love and respect are a wonderful key not only for the family life but also for every relationship.”
“Ah I understand now. To live in the Trinity is to live lovingly and respectfully. I will share this with my classmates next week. I’m so happy mom!”
The mother gently looks at her son with a smile, saying in her heart: “My dearest, do you know that I am ten times happier than you are?!”
“My dear, you’re intelligent. I’m very proud of you. Now, meal is ready. Today would you make the sign of the Cross to thank and invite the Trinity to our table?”
“Yes, mom. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen…”
