See you again
Write it down or not? I kept asking myself. Finally, the decision: Yes. Therefore, what you are reading now is written down as a prayer of trust prayed with and for a very dear friend of mine who is preparing…to die.
Many know her (directly or through some of my writings) because her ‘charity in suffering’ has left profound impacts on their lives. Rare are those who undergo extreme pains in life like her, rarer are those who can keep the purity of faith through such pains. My deep admiration goes to this lady fragile in body and yet courageous and strong in spirit. I am grateful to this friend who is facing death and yet consolidating my faith in the eternal life.
Her parents gave her the Christian name of Martha. Like saint Martha, her life has been submerged in loving service. While very few people know of her quiet endurance of suffering and sacrifice, many have been wonderfully transformed by their encounters with her.
In only a few hours, in a hospital room, a painful treatment with little chance of survival will take place. A few hours may seem like eternity….
Jesus says to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” Martha replies: “Yes, Lord.” (John 11:25-27)
This afternoon, in our conversation (possibly the last), my close friend – a small ordinary lady like other women – gently and peacefully told me: “If we no longer have a chance to see each other on earth, see you in heaven!”
My brother/sister, please join me in praying with her and for her at this very moment.
Thank you very much!
Joseph Viet, O.Carm.
